Pride and Joy of Illinois

So my Bears won today 39-14. This means they get to be part of the Superbowl in Miami on the Fourth of February. Their head coach Lovie Smith is the first black head coach to be in the Superbowl, beating his former boss and friend Tony Dungy by a few hours. This means there will be two weeks of coverage by media. This is generally a bad thing. Everyone will know that Bob Sanders, safety for the Colts, was born Demond Sanders and asked his mother to switch to something easier. We'll know a lot more about Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith's relationship, faith, and race. We'll know the career stats for not only Peyton Manning and Rex Grossman, but Dan Klecko and Jason McKie. I'll try not to saturate this space with such pedestrian stuff. This is exciting for my father and me because he is a Colts fan and I am a Bears fan. That is one story you won't hear about on ESPN.

Congratulations. You'll have to tell me what to look for during the game, since I'm a football illiterate.

Bear Down.

Bear Down, Chicago Bears. (If you have a challenge, you need to pause and confront it.)

Make every play clear the way to victory. (Each choice you make or act you take contributes to overcoming or succumbing to said challenge.)

Bear Down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly. (Don't be afraid to attack your challenge boldly.)

We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation. (You have had success in the past. It is okay to use that to inspire you to success again.)

Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you're wearing the crown. (Be proud. Be confident.)

You're the pride and joy of Illinois, Chicago Bears, bear down. (You're not alone. You have a support group that cares about you and your struggles.)

The Chicago Bears that I have rooted for since I was a young lad are playing in their conference's championship game this Sunday. If they win, they get to be part of the TV program that is watched by more people around the world than any other each year.

They ARE Who We THOUGHT They Were!

And we let'em off the hook!

Those are Denny Green's words after my favorite team the Chicago Bears came back from 20 points down to win the game with 15 minutes and 3 seconds left. The Bears had 6 turnovers in the game and managed only three points from the offense, yet they still won the game. The comeback was keyed by two forced fumbles returned for touchdowns, by the defense, and, with less than three minutes left, a punt return for a touchdown.

I was watching the postgame press conference live on ESPN News when seemingly with no build up, Green exploded. Here is the video. Here is an article about the game with the best quote of Green's comments.

In other news, Wendy mentioned that my city-league flag football team is playing the other SDA team on Sunday. I find this great because October 22nd is the anniversary of the Great Disappointment. Going by our previous games against other teams in the league, the other team will be experiencing the disappointment.

The TV shows that have made my schedule this season are Amazing Race 10, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Friday Night Lights, South Park, Freakshow, Top Chef 2, My Name Is Earl, The Office, and Grey's Anatomy. These are on top of the football. Grey's is on ABC; Amazing Race is on CBS, but most of the others are on NBC, with Top Chef on Bravo, an NBC affiliate.

Yeah, I don't understand that "They are who we thought they were!" business. Am I missing some socio-historical context, or was the dude just a little crazy?

Good luck on disappointing!

Ceri, I don't know if you read the article, but the pertinent socio-historical context is that going into the game, the Bears had scored the most points and allowed the fewest making them the number one ranked team in offense and defense. Their previous five games they outscored their opponents 156-36. This gave them an aura of invincibility. Everyone that picks NFL games picked the Bears to win, and win big. Also, the Bears played the Cardinals in the third preseason game and lost. Many take put no weight in that because it is just preseason and the games don't count. The Bears head coach Lovie Smith admitted as much saying they were very vanilla in their game plan, knowing they would be playing the Cardinals in the regular season. So we have a team in the Cardinals who is getting no respect for what they did on the football field and are dismissed before the game even begins. They then take a 20-0 lead at half-time and lose the game after dominating for three quarters.

Understandably, Green was upset at the disrespect his team was given. I think what he means in saying "They are who we thought they were. " is that they were mortals that we knew we could compete with and possibly beat on the field. We proved that for three quarters but we blew it and I'm not happy.

I hope that helps.

Ah-HA! Thanks, Daniel, that explains things probably better than the article would have.

So did you disappoint?

We served them a heaping helping of disappointment. I'm glad I could help clarify for you.

There was much disappointing, but not for me. One of the guys on the other team was wearing blue tight thingies with red shorts on over them.

All I could think about was Superman, and the latest movie, and how he was rather, um, big, and the film had to be edited as to not scare small children.

It was a good game.
